En route from Java to Melbourne, crew of 43, cargo of wheat. Ran aground about 10 nautical miles north of Point Cloates. Sent distress signals to nearby Chofuko Maru, who also ran aground, caught fire and sank.
Underwater
A channel was blasted into reef and the Shunsei Maru was later salvaged. The anchors and chain used to recover the vessel still remain to mark the site of stranding
